‘Bolshoi' in Russian means huge or ‘elegant.' True to its name, the Theater is one of the major symbols of the great nation and its culture.

The history of music theatre development worldwide has proved that steady and rapid development of the theatre company has to be warranted by the high quality productions that are comparable to the highest international standards. Bolshoi Theatre is the national theatre of Russia. This is the core of the Russian musical tradition and also an international center of the music culture.

The Bolshoi Theatre has staged several new productions of classical Russian operas: Mussorgsky's Khovanshchina, Glinka's Ruslan and Lyudmila and Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa. The forthcoming 2006/07 season will be of much more importance for it will bring two new productions of operas from what is known as the golden treasury of Russian musical culture. Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov have long ago broken all records for opera production longevity.

It endeavors to bring in more of such Russian opera classics. To increase all the levels of comfort, the installation of closed- circuit TV cameras in and around the Theatre, the presence in the auditorium and metal detector procedures, are just some of the special measures initiated to guarantee your safety.
