Tretyakov Art Gallery II

Russian art and architecture seems to entice many of the visitors to a rather baffling array of exotic forms and alien sensibilities. The permanent exhibition "Art of the 20th Century" displays a rich collection of Russian paintings.

Here you can see the world wide known Masterpieces as the 'White square on white' by the Kasimir Malevich, or the warm 'Improvisations' by the expressionist abstract Wassily Kandinsky.

Tretyakov gallery has a nice collection of those paintings made in the Soviet times. In 1962, after the party leaders started to care about art there were two streams: official and unofficial art. The first imposed Realism and themes such as History and Labor. The latter went through different styles such as Pop art; metaphysical abstraction.It is the national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the greatest museums in the world. It is not far from the Kremlin. The Gallery's collection consists entirely of Russian art and artists who have made а contribution to the history of Russian art or been closely connected with it. The collection contains more than 130 000 works of painting, sculpture and graphics, created throughout the centuries by successive generations of Russian artists. New building of the Tretyakov Gallery at Krymskiy Val houses a unique museum exhibition of national 20th century art.
